Just Believing… or Following?
Yesterday I heard someone say they think there’s a difference between calling yourself a Christian or a Believer. Their point (I believe) was that anyone can call themselves a Christian but it’s more “REAL” to call yourself Believer if you’ve “got faith”.
I found that thought interesting. In many ways I totally agree. The term Christian gets thrown around so much it’s unfortunately become a simple label which doesn’t always have the best example coming along with it. But I think that being a “Believer” isn’t that great either. I know it’s hard for some of us to “just believe”. Trust me, I’ve been there. Sure, it’s a step in the right direction, but it’s only a step. And one step isn’t really going to get you anywhere.
I think a great name for someone who has a passion filled relationship with Jesus Christ, someone who is really on fire (I mean really), someone who is motived to be like Christ, someone who TRUSTs in God completely (yes I said completely), someone who feels alive, and someone who feels they must serve, that person… I’d call them a follower.
I think the word follower is actually pretty cool, it’s an active word. Take a quick look at the definition.
fol·low·er:
1. One who subscribes to the teachings or methods of another; an adherent
2. A servant; a subordinate.
3. A fan; an enthusiast.
4. One that imitates or copies another
So you can see these 4 possible options are pretty fitting for someone I just described.
1. They follow the teachings of Jesus (check mark).
2. They want to serve God (check mark).
3. They are enthused about their faith (check mark)
4. AND… they try to “copy” or “Be Like” Christ. (big check mark)
Too bad our culture has given that concept of following a bad name. Everyone is pushed to be leaders and be #1 or to be the best. No one in society is really taught to be happy simply following. If we could take our own ego out of our head, I think we could all be happy followers. It’s at least worth a try.
I don’t know about you, but I think I’m going to call myself a Follower. I kinda like the ring of it.
